Meet Murphy

Jennifer Kenny is a preconstruction supervisor at Murphy who works within the Natural Resources sector. Find out what's involved.

What is your role at Murphy?

My role consists of supervising the tender process from release of documentation by the client, right through to submission.

Describe your typical day.

I like arriving early to work early, making sure I eat breakfast and have my morning ‘cupán tae’, before I get stuck in.

I receive new tenders, which involves checking all the information from the client, distributing it internally to the relevant people and focusing on working collaboratively - organising tender kick-offs, risk-workshops, adjudication meetings, compiling tender programmes and action plans in-line with requirements. I develop a timeline on each project to tender, to ensure we meet the client deadlines.

I also get to catch up with my buds over lunch - while after work I daydream of Hawaiian beaches and George Clooney.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the minute along with my normal day-to-day tasks I am working with the Bromborough bid manager, Mike Bloor, to standardise the tender process for the natural resources sector. This will streamline the process so we remain organised and collaborate, plus ensure we communicate efficiently cross-functionally.

What is your greatest achievement at Murphy?

I previously worked in the occupational health department and helped to put a new process in place for managing occupational health records – meaning that all records are now saved in a centralised place so the team has full access to all records in one place, avoiding duplication and saving time. For all of us in occupational health it was a great achievement.

What’s your happiest memory of the company?

It’s impossible to just pick one. I have had so many great times in the company and have met some amazing people and made great friends.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The satisfaction of completing a tender, when the countdown is on and you press that submit button there is no better feeling.

Who has been your inspiration for your career?

My parents, they are amazing. I definitely get my driving skills from my mum and my quick wit from my dad. For that, I will always be grateful.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to get into a similar role?

Although my current position is very rewarding, it requires being focused, being capable of meeting tight deadlines, working under pressure - plus being willing to put in late nights.

What attracted you towards a career with Murphy?

Throughout the years a number of my family members have worked at Murphy and upon completion of my studies at the University in Derry, in 2013, I was offered a position in the occupational health department.

How is Murphy supporting you in your career?

My current position has provided me with the opportunity to work under experienced construction professionals giving me invaluable knowledge within the natural resources sector. Additionally, my current position will allow me the opportunity to grow with the company and provide me with a stable future.
